Although most people are scared of the word ‘Cancer’ in diseases, as it is well known, it is a curable disease, especially when detected at the early stages. The chances of survival of a cancer patient increase when it’s detected early because the patients get a headstart in curing the disease.
Focusing on early detection and distinct communities a team of researchers of Sbarro Institute and Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) at Temple University’s College of Science and Technology, under the guidance of Dr. Antonio Giordano is working on a “Health Equity Project” that seeks to determine if there is a link between cancer and where a patient lives. Dr. Giordano and his team’s research is focused on North Philadelphia and the neighborhoods around Temple University.
“Today we have developed technologies and drugs that fight terrible diseases like breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, mesothelioma,” says Dr. Antonio Giordano, “I think this is the best place to start the investigation! To make sure that our community can benefit from the work done by this institution in this area.”
“Our environment plays an important role for example exposure to different pollutants, water insects, diet.” Says Jackie Sacki one of the team members and Adjunct Professor at Temple University.
Dr. Antonio Giordano underlines that access to treatment has been found difficult for African-American women. Dr. Giordano says, “only two percent of African-American women are able to access the latest therapeutic drugs; despite the fact that African-American women develop the most aggressive type of breast cancer at a young age. Something has to be done.”
Under the pledge of “Close The Care Gap” – a mission of World Cancer Day 2022 – Dr. Antonio Giordano is determined to make a positive change in the North Philadelphia community and beyond!
