Nowadays, single-cell RNA sequencing technologies and related bioinformatics tools are emerging as essential devices for dissecting tumors at single-cell resolution and understanding carcinogenesis and drug response mechanisms, representing a turning point in cancer research.
The most significant outcomes have been collected and discussed in the review “Single-cell RNA sequencing and bioinformatics as tools to decipher cancer heterogenicity and mechanisms of drug resistance ” by Diletta Rosati, PhD student of the University of Siena and by Prof. Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., Founder and Director of the Sbarro Health Research Organization and the Sbarro Institute for Molecular Medicine and Cancer Research at Temple University in Philadelphia, and Professor of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Siena, Italy. The review was published in October 2021 in the prestigious journal Biochemical Pharmacology.
The review collected studies concerning the single-cell sequencing and bioinformatics technologies on different tumors, highlighting their contribution in addressing two of the main cancer issues: cancer heterogeneity and cell lineage-dependent drug resistance. Moreover, the inevitable challenges associated with these innovative technologies to reduce costs and enhance performance are discussed.
The authors conclude that the applicability of this techniques will exponentially increase the understanding of tumor biology at the single-cell level leading to a progressive advancement of research and personalised medicine in order to identify novel targets for cancer therapy.
